January: The Month of New Beginnings and Breakups

There’s something about January that brings a strange mix of emotions. We flip the calendar to a new year, full of resolutions, hope, and fresh starts. Yet, for many, January feels heavy—it’s even been labeled "Breakup Month." Research shows more people end relationships in January than at any other time of the year.

And it’s not just romantic relationships. Some people choose January to walk away from a job that’s been draining them. Others decide it’s time to leave a church where they no longer feel connected. It’s a month of re-evaluating commitments, and often, that means letting go of something that no longer fits. But here’s the tension: while new beginnings can be exciting, breaking free from something familiar—whether it’s a relationship or job—is painful. Even if the change is necessary, it can leave you questioning yourself, feeling lonely, or wondering if you made the right choice.

So, how do we deal with this tension? How do we embrace the new without letting the pain of the past hold us back?

The Bible gives us a clear foundation for these moments. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

God doesn’t shy away from our mess or heartbreak. He draws near, offering comfort, strength, and the assurance that we are not alone.

Steps to Break Free

Breaking free from the tension of January’s mix of hope and hurt requires intentionality. Here are practical steps to help you move forward with faith and confidence:

1) Acknowledge the Pain, but Don’t Dwell There

It’s okay to admit that something hurt you—whether it’s the loss of a relationship, the struggle of a job change, or the disappointment of leaving a church. God invites us to bring our pain to Him honestly. 1 Peter 5:7 encourages us to “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Challenge: Write down what you’re grieving and bring it to God in prayer. Say it out loud: “God, this hurts. Help me trust You with it.”

2) Look for God’s Faithfulness in the Change

One of the most common pitfalls during times of transition is the tendency to isolate. Whether you're stepping away from a relationship, a job, or a familiar community, staying connected to people who uplift and challenge you to grow is essential.

Challenge: Reach out to a trusted friend, mentor, or small group and share what you’re going through. Allow others to walk alongside you. 

3) Create Space for Something New

Endings can leave a void in your life, and it’s tempting to fill it with distractions. Instead, intentionally seek God and ask Him what He wants to do in this new chapter. Psalm 46:10 reminds us to “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Challenge: Dedicate 10 minutes each day to pray and journal about what’s next. Ask God to guide your steps and show you how to use this season for growth.

4) Be Patient

Healing and moving forward take time. You might not feel “okay” right away—and that’s normal. Trust that God is at work, even in the waiting. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Challenge: Each morning, speak this truth to yourself: “God’s mercies are new today. I will trust Him with this day.”

Finding Hope in Every Ending

January might feel like “Breakup Month,” but it’s also a time for new opportunities. Endings—though painful—are often God’s way of redirecting us to something better. Whether you’re walking away from a relationship or stepping out of a job, trust that God is near. He is close to the brokenhearted and ready to bring healing and purpose out of your pain.

The beauty of a new year is the reminder that God is a God of new beginnings. Whatever January brings, lean into His promises. He’s making a way for you, and His presence is enough to carry you through.
