The Power of Holy Tears: Finding Purpose in Our Deepest Emotions
When was the last time you experienced a truly deep cry?
Not just misty eyes from a moving song or a Hallmark moment—but the kind of cry that starts in your gut, hijacks your breath, tightens your chest, and flows from somewhere deeper than words.
That kind of crying often signals something significant in our soul. And in God’s eyes, those tears carry weight.

What Makes Our Tears Holy?
Why Did Jesus Weep?
One of the most powerful images in Scripture is that of Jesus weeping—not once, but multiple times. He didn't hold back His emotions; He leaned into them, letting His tears flow as an expression of deep compassion, grief, and love.
1. Jesus Wept for a Friend – John 11:35
This is the shortest verse in the Bible, but one of the loudest in meaning:
“Jesus wept.”
Here, He stood outside the tomb of Lazarus. Even though He knew He was about to raise His friend from the dead, Jesus still paused. He still felt the sting of loss. He wept with the grieving. This wasn’t performative—it was personal. He felt the pain of those around Him.
2. Jesus Wept for a City – Luke 19:41-44
The crowd was celebrating as Jesus approached Jerusalem just days before His crucifixion. But Jesus? He was sobbing.
“As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, ‘If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes.’”
(Luke 19:41-42, NIV)
The Greek word used here is “klaiō” (κλαίω) — it means to wail, to sob, to cry aloud from the gut. This wasn’t a single tear; this was holy heartbreak.
Jesus wept not because of what was coming for Him but because people missed their moment of peace. Their Savior was right before them, and they didn’t see it.
What Should Move Us to Tears?
If Jesus wept over the spiritually lost, shouldn’t we?
If our eyes are dry, maybe our hearts are distracted.
Who around us is wandering through life without hope or truth?

Who around us is wandering through life without hope or truth?
- Neighbors who don’t know the peace of Christ
- Coworkers searching for meaning
- Friends and family wrestling with guilt, shame, or emptiness
- People stuck in cycles of addiction, loneliness, or fear
- We were never meant to follow Jesus with dry eyes and hard hearts. Holy tears are the evidence of holy love.
How Do Holy Tears Lead to Action?
God doesn’t waste our tears. They’re meant to lead us somewhere—not to despair, but to compassion-fueled action.
Jesus didn’t just cry—He moved.
And when we allow our emotions to be guided by the Spirit, they can move us too.
Here’s how:
Life Application – Don’t Let Your Tears Stop with Emotion
Let’s move from tears to transformation.
This week:
✅ Identify your “One.”
Who’s the person God is putting on your heart?
✅ Pray by name.
Ask God to open their heart—and yours.
✅ Look for a moment to speak.
It could be lunch, a text, a coffee—just be ready.
✅ Invite them to church.
This Easter season is the perfect time.
Jesus didn’t just cry—He moved.
And when we allow our emotions to be guided by the Spirit, they can move us too.
Here’s how:
- Pray for the lost.
- Ask God to break your heart for what breaks His. Pray by name.
- Look for divine appointments.
- That “random” conversation may be heaven-sent.
- Extend an invitation.
- Sometimes, all it takes is, “Hey, want to come to church with me?”
- Share your story.
- You don’t have to preach. Just tell someone what Jesus did in your life.

Reflection Questions
Who in my life needs Jesus most right now?
What’s holding me back from sharing with them?
How can I show Christ’s love in a real way this week?
Final Thought: Let Your Tears Turn Into Purpose
Your tears matter. They reveal what you care about. Let them point you to your purpose.
Jesus wept—over people, cities, and moments missed.
So should we.
Because when our hearts are moved, our feet start walking. Our hands reach out. And our lives begin to look like His.
Remember: You don’t have to save the world. Just love your “one” like Jesus would.
The Gospel moves at the speed of relationships—so let’s go, with tears in our eyes and hope in our hearts.
