Finding Peace in the Waiting
In this season of Christmas, we find ourselves reflecting on the themes of waiting and anticipation. Just as Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" eagerly awaited his Red Ryder BB gun, we too experience seasons of waiting in our lives. This sermon explores the concept of waiting through the lens of Ralphie's story and the biblical narrative, offering insights on how to find peace and purpose during these times.
Why is Waiting So Hard?
The Israelites' Long Wait for the Messiah
The Israelites knew the pain of waiting all too well. Since the fall of man, they awaited the promised Messiah to reconcile them to God. This promise was reiterated through prophets like Isaiah, who provided hope and comfort during exile and hardship. Isaiah 40:29-31 beautifully captures this promise: "He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength... but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength."
The Peace of God in Waiting
Philippians 4:7 (ESV):
"And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
This verse is a beautiful reminder that God’s peace isn’t something we can fully comprehend—it goes beyond our human understanding. It’s a divine assurance that steadies us in the storms of life, guards our hearts from fear, and protects our minds from overwhelming anxiety.
When we surrender our worries to God through prayer, He exchanges our chaos for His calm. This peace doesn’t depend on our circumstances; it comes from trusting Christ and His promises. Let His peace anchor your soul, whether you're in a season of waiting, uncertainty, or trial.
Active Trust: Waiting with Purpose
Waiting isn't about sitting idly; it's about active trust. Just as Ralphie schemed and strategized to get his BB gun, we, too, must engage in activities that draw us closer to God during our waiting periods.
This involves prayer, studying scripture, and maintaining faith in God's promises. Isaiah's message to the exiled Israelites was hope and encouragement, reminding them that those waiting for the Lord will be renewed and sustained.
Lessons from James: Patience and Perseverance
James 5:7-11 (ESV):
"Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful."
James 5:7-11 encourages believers to be patient and steadfast, using the example of farmers who wait for their crops to grow. This metaphor highlights the importance of trusting God's timing and remaining faithful in our daily tasks. James also reminds us of the prophets who endured suffering and persecution while waiting for the Messiah, emphasizing the blessings of steadfastness.

Life Application
Waiting is an inevitable part of life, but it doesn't have to be a time of frustration and anxiety. Instead, it can be a period of growth and deepening faith. Here are some questions to reflect on this week:
1. How can I actively trust God during my season of waiting?
2. What steps can I take to draw closer to God and find peace in His promises?
3. How can I use my waiting period to serve others and grow in my faith?
As we navigate our own seasons of waiting, let's remember the lessons from Ralphie and the Israelites. Waiting is not wasted time; it's an opportunity to grow closer to God and to trust in His perfect timing. By focusing on what God is doing in us during these periods, we can find peace and purpose, knowing that His promises will be fulfilled.

Final Thought
This week, challenge yourself to focus not on the waiting, but on what God is doing in you as you wait. Reflect on Psalm 130:5, "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope." Use this time to grow in your faith, serve others, and trust in God's perfect timing. Remember, the joy and peace that come from God's fulfilled promises are worth the wait.
